The Tragedy

Shooting guns
Throwing bombs
Not so much having fun.

Going back to base
Many great Anzacs killed
Getting shot in the face.*

So many Australians died
8709 killed
Wow, what a big number!

Quite a lot of New Zealanders
2721 killed
Makes me even cry.

Now
Once every year
New Zealanders and Australians
Wear red poppies.

Here and there
Everywhere
To remember and honour

The Anzacs who died
April 25th 1915.


*To avoid being shot when shooting over the top of the sandbags piled on top of the trenches, ANZAC soldiers made holes (loopholes) to shoot through between the sandbags. This was still a problem as soldiers could be shot in the face while firing as the corners of the sandbags weren't very good at stopping bullets. The Turks had iron loopholes to shoot through.
